January 7th - Woodcote 10K
January 13th - Chiltern Cross Country League
February 11th - Wokingham Half Marathon
At Wokingham Half Marathon on Sunday, there was a huge turn-out from Maidenhead Athletic Club with no less than 32 members attempting the course on a day when luckily the weather turned out fine. The event which also doubled as the Berkshire County Half-Marathon Championships saw Maidenhead AC pick up no less than 7 county medals on the day. Mike Trees finished in 1:12:43, followed by Mark Hollands in 1:15:49 who won the Berkshire Championships MV40 gold medal, Simon Allison in 1:17:10 (Berkshire MV40 silver), and Paul Bradley 1:25:39. Steph James was the first Maidenhead lady in at 1:26:43 and won the ladies County Championships, ahead of Joe Middleton 1:26:49, Shea Hindman 1:27:37 and James Tarrant 1:28:23. Rieko Trees was second Maidenhead lady in 1:30:48, then David Ridley 1:32:54 (Berkshire MV50 bronze). Leo Botha 1:37:13, Clyde McCrabbe 1:37:54, John Scaife 1:38:02 and Tim Holt 1:39:36 all came in under 1hr 40m, and John Wilson's time was 1:40 on the dot. Sayeed Islam was pleased with his time of 1:42:44, and Dave Waterman 1:43:42 (Berkshire MV60 silver), Simon Emsley 1:45:00, Brian Roles 1:47:01 (Berkshire MV60 bronze) were not far behind. Louella Fernandes finished well in 2:04:44, and Anushka Howell 2:06:29 and Gill Evans 2:06:48 (Berkshire FV55 gold) ran very well to finish just ahead of Carole Shaw 2:07:00 and Linda Fox 2:07:29. Heather Penny did a very creditable time of 2:10:31 for her first half marathon, and Rosie Pompermaier completed the line-up at 2:29:06.
February 17th
- Chiltern League Cross Country

Eighteen Maidenhead AC members braved heavy conditions, which saw
several competitors lose their footwear, in the final round of the Chiltern
League Cross Country on Saturday. Whilst there were some notable individual
successes, the team weakened by illness, injury and work commitments dropped
out of the top two promotion places and into third. Although Maidenhead's
total of 3297 points was nearly 800 clear of 4th placed Stevenage, they
finished an agonising 19 points behind second placed Silson Joggers. Local
team Handy Cross were the divisional winners. In addition to finishing third
club overall, Maidenhead's men won silver medals in the veteran's team
competition, with the men's team overall taking bronze. On the day, Steph
James led the women home in third place, followed by Janette Picton (19th)
and Sue McEwen (32nd). Andy Macaskill was again the leading man, also third,
closely followed by Mark Hollands (5th) and Simon Allison (12th). Miles
Bennett (33rd), Paul Bradley (40th), Chris Donald (44th), Jim Tarrant
(52nd), Darrell Bressington (66th), John Scaife (67th), Gerry Killen (68th),
John Rickman (77th), Simon Emsley (78th), Neil Bennet (81st) and Alan Church
(83rd) completed the line-up.
The only Maidenhead Junior running was Bryony Hollands who finished 46th in
the Girls Under-11 race.
Individually, Steph James secured 2nd place overall for the season in the
women's competition, and 1st female under 35. Mark Hollands (1st) and Simon
Allison (2nd) headed the veterans category (MV40), also placing 5th and 7th
overall in the men's competition.

March 18th - Finchley 20
Maidenhead AC's Jon Kew and Mark Hollands joined over 400 runners who
completed the Finchley 20 mile race on Sunday. The strong blustery wind and
undulating course ensured a hard workout for the runners, many of whom were
using the 4-lap race as preparation for the Flora London Marathon in just 5
weeks time. Despite using this as a hard training run, rather than a full
race effort, Hollands' time of 2:01:52 was good enough to finish 6th
overall, and win the Veterans category (MV40) by over 7 minutes. Kew
finished in 2:27:15, comfortably inside the 2:30 target that he'd set
himself.
March 25th - Reading Half Marathon
The ever improving Matt Sinnott led Maidenhead Athletic Club's team home in
Sunday's Reading Half marathon, in a personal best time of 1:21:29.
Following Matt were Paul Bradley (1:24:14), Chris Paine (1:24:34), Jim
Tarrant (1:29:26), Joy Noad (1:34:13), John Wilson (1:34:54), John Smith
(1:48:21), Katie Hathaway (1:48:55), Peter Green (1:51:03), Dawn Wrigley
(1:56:58), Linda Fox (2:03:47), Helen Sutton (2:17:10) and Anne Sloan & Jon
Kew coming home together in 2:51:55. At the Liverpool Half Marathon, MAC's
Gerry Killen shrugged off recent injuries to record a creditable 1:36:02.
April 6th - Maidenhead Easter Ten
Phil Wicks wrote himself into the Maidenhead Easter 10 history books when he won the prestigious race for the fourth consecutive year on Friday – finishing in an impressive 49 minutes and 41 seconds. He is also the first runner to win it four times.
The race proved as popular as ever with the threshold reached, and entries closed prior to the race. The total of 968 finishers was just three short of the record set in 2005.
Participation in the event, which this year incorporated the Berkshire 10 mile championship, for Maidenhead Athletic Club runners was limited due to organisational demands, but nevertheless a select group of 10 athletes from the club swept up seven of the 24 medals on offer. Three club members also successfully added the 0 mile title to the gold medals they won at February’s Wokingham Half Marathon. These were Mark Hollands in the male vet 40 category with a time of 56:56, Steph James (senior female, 1:05:01) and Gill Evans (female vet 55, 1:33:18). Silver medals were won by Andy Macaskill (senior male, 55:11) and Dave Waterman (male vet 60, 1:17:42), while collecting bronze were Matt Sinott (male vet 40, 1:01:12) and Brian Roles (male vet 60, 1:17:47). David Ridley narrowly missed out in the male vet 50 category with fifth place and a time of 1:09:51. With just the 10k and marathon championships remaining, Hollands, Waterman, James and Evans all lead their respective Berkshire County Road Running Championship categories this season. Despite the enforced unavailability of many, the MAC men’s team achieved third place in the team race.
The race was a massive undertaking for Maidenhead Athletic Club and the club
would like to thank David Ross, race director, and all those members, family
and friends who gave their time to make the race the success it was. The
club would also like to thank Nortel for hosting the race and specifically
Ricardo Miller, Tony Arnold and Joe Hart and their teams at Nortel for their
enthusiastic support.
MAC's
Gill Evans finished
the Paris Marathon in 4:58:27
despite having to contend with blazing 30 degree temperatures. The
unseasonably warm weather made it tough going for several of the
Maidenhead A.C. athletes competing in Sunday's Flora London
Marathon. Star performance of the day went to Matt Sinnott who
capped a year of notable improvement by beating the three-hour
mark for the first time, finishing in 2 hours 59 minutes 24
seconds. Top runner Andy
Macaskill led the MAC team home with an impressive 2:36:08, with
Mark Hollands close behind in 2:40:26. Debutants Susan
Sale, mother of MAC juniors Devon & India, and friend Tammie
Allum showed veteran marathon management skills by starting
slowly, taking plenty of water and moving gradually up the field
to come home together in 4:41:45 and treating the Mall VIP
stands to a sprint finish in the process. Other MAC
finishers were Billy Wilson (3:38:42), Michael Park (3:48:03),
David Ridley (3:54:16), Dave Waterman (3:59:50), Bill Roach
(4:02:34), Leo Botha (4:27:49), Dave Rosewell (4:36:29), Linda
Fox (4:45:52) and Peter Bark (4:46:26).
May 13th - Marlow 5
May 13th - Woodley 10K
Meanwhile Nigel Patterson claimed first
over 50 home in the Woodley 10k in 41:36. Jonathan Oliver
finished in 46:49 and Rosie Pompermaier in 67:36.
Despite soaring temperatures on
Sunday, over 600 runners (a record) completed the Wargrave 10k.
Amongst the contingent were 22 from Maidenhead AC, including
overall race winner Andy Macaskill. Macaskill, a former Wargrave
Runner, continued his fine recent form which has seen him finish
86th in the London Marathon, and joint winner of an
ultra-marathon in the last 2 months. Macaskill ran with the lead
pack, including Chris and Mike Bradfield of Datchet Dashers,
before pulling away over the last kilometer to finish in 34:23.
Mark Hollands (36:35) and Jon Kew (37:04) both finished inside
the top 20, with Steph James (42:26) leading the Maidenhead
women home.
The event, which incorporated the
Berkshire County 10km Championships, saw Maidenhead pick up 6 of
the 24 medals on offer, with Andy Macaskill (Gold - Male under
40), Mark Hollands (Silver - Male Vet 40), Paul Bradley (Bronze
- MV50), Cavan Butler (Bronze - MV60), Steph James (Gold -
Female under 35) and Gill Evans (Bronze FV55) all medalling.
This event completed the 2007 County series of 4 races (10k,
10M, Half Marathon and Marathon) and saw Macaskill, Hollands,
James and Evans each win their respective categories for the
series overall. James' 10km gold was her 3rd of the series,
whilst Hollands missed out on a clean sweep of 4 golds by just 9
seconds on Sunday.
Full MAC results: 1 MACASKILL,

Maidenhead AC's Andy Macaskill romped home for his 2nd win in as
many days as he won a local 5k race at Hurley last Tuesday
evening. Apparently none the worse for his 10k win at Wargrave
on the Sunday, Macaskill led home the 265-strong field to win in
15:45. The 6 race series hosted by local clubs for the benefit
of their own members has been running for a number of years, but
only 3 other people have broken 16 minutes on any of the courses
since 2000. Maidenhead represented over a quarter of the
assembled field, and strong performances saw them fill 5 of the
top 9 places with Simon Allison 4th (16:39), Laurence Miles 5th
(16:40), Mark Hollands 7th (16:53) and Jon Kew 9th (17:08).
Other notable performances came from Sue Blackett, 2nd lady
(18:21) and Josh Knight, 1st junior (18:42).
June 17th - Comrades Marathon
After the recent deluge conditions were relatively calm for the
Dorney Dash, with just a light drizzle and a small breeze.
Making it home first for MAC was Miles Bennett in a fine time of
38 mins 51 secs. Nigel Patterson put in a good effort for 41.34,
with Alistair Benbow next in 41.47. The course is flat and fast
and there followed a procession of Maidenhead runners under 50
minutes, firstly Chris Owen 42.29, John Scaife 43.30, Jon Oliver
44.26, David Ridley 45.26, Bruce McEwen 46.32, Simon Emsley
48.03, and Andy Eden 48.34. Leading the ladies home was Sue
McEwen in 51.41, followed by relative newcomer Leila Oliver
52:39, Anna Carton 56.20, Gill Evans 57.56 and Rosie Pompamaier
69.29. In between was Peter Slater in 52.56.

Bressington (32:51). Six members of MAC made their way to Aylesbury for this
classic 10K race. Conditions were good for running, mainly
overcast, with a light breeze. Making the most of the conditions
was Romano D'Aversa, who came home in 37 mins 53 secs to take
27th place. In a dream first 10K Ian Weatherall exceeded
expectations to clock 43:14. Also having fine runs were Tim Holt
(45:32) and Tom Quigley in 46:01. In the over 60 category there
were two other good runs from Dave Waterman (49:50) and club
president Pete Ison with 56:44.

September 2nd - Monaco Ironman 70.3 triathlon September
2nd - Wissey Half Marathon
September 9th - Peasemore Festival 5 mile
Maidenhead runners were spread far and wide over last
weekend as they took part in events in very different
arenas. At Berlin, Billy Wilson completed the same course
that produced a World Mens Marathon record on the same day,
as he finished in a very credible 3 hrs 36 min.
October 14th - Cabbage Patch 10
October 14th - Swindon Half Marathon
November 4th - Marlow Half Marathon
December 1st - Cyprus International 4-Day Challenge
Maidenhead AC runners Darrell Bressington and Gerry Killen travelled to
Cyprus to compete in the International 4-Day Challenge. The event

off-road Half Marathon and a 10K road race around the streets of Paphos.
Killen finished in 70th place overall with a time of 4 hours, six
minutes and 32 seconds, just ahead of Bressington in 88th place with
4:11:25.
April 15th - Lochaber Marathon
Having missed out on a London place, Simon Emsley travelled north of
the border to the Lochaber Marathon. In somewhat cooler conditions, but on
an undulating course, Emsley managed a time of 3:39:42.
April 15th - Paris Marathon
April 22nd - Flora London Marathon
April 29th - Bracknell Half Marathon
Although there were only three ladies representing Maidenhead AC
in the weekend's Bracknell Half Marathon, the team of Steph
James, Alison Attard and Anoushka Howell, was good enough to
take third place in the women's team race with times of I:26:46,
1:52:40 and 2:04:25 respectively. MAC's only male
representative, Paul Bradley grabbed a top twenty finish with a
time of 1:25:06.

In the Shakespeare Marathon at Stratford-upon-Avon, Maidenhead's
Jon Kew and Darrell Bressington ran together to come home in 3
hours 52 minutes and 44 seconds. Sayeed Islam crossed the line
in 4:20:25 and Peter Slater followed in 4:35:17. In the Half
Marathon race, Sue McEwen ran well to finish in 1:42:51.
April 29th - Hamburg Marathon
MAC's Gerry Killen travelled to Germany to compete in the
Hamburg Marathon. On a day much hotter than expected, Killen
recorded an excellent time of 3:36:26.
May 6th - Vancouver Marathon
John Smith ran a personal best at Vancouver Marathon. On a wet and
undulating course he bettered his previous time by 9 minutes to
cross the line in 3:58:09. A great run when you consider all the
travelling required. He was satisfied with his training programme
and really pleased with his marathon race in not ideal conditions.
He actually managed a slightly faster second half on the more
undulating part of the course.
May 6th - Three Forts Marathon
For the seniors, it has been a busy two weeks' of races. The toughest of
these was undoubtedly the 3 Forts Marathon, which despite its title is a
27 mile race run over tricky and undulating terrain on the South Downs.
Leading the Maidenhead contingent home was Claire Donald in a time of
3:58:43, followed by husband Chris Donald (4:21:49), Stuart Mannering
(4:23:16), Carolyn Lockett (4:34:36) and Simon Emsley (4:36:53).

(45:05), followed by husband Bruce in 46:43. Jill Smith and Justine
Tooms came home together in 55:21, with Cheryl Slater
completing the Maidenhead contingent in 61:01.
June 12th - Marlow 5K

Two Maidenhead runners achieved success in two very different
races on two different Continents. For the second year running
Simon Emsley tackled the gruelling Comrades 'marathon', a mere
89.3 kms (around 55 miles) from Pietermaritzburg to Durban,
South Africa. This year it was the 'downhill' version, however,
severe downhill stretches with reverse cambers make for
interesting running.. Runners set off at dawn, with the UK
having the largest numbers of runners (90) outside of South
Africa. The runners set off to the strains of 'Chariots of Fire'
and the crowing of a cockerel. Simon reached 60 kms only to
hear on a passing car radio that the winner had just finished in
a record breaking time. At last he spotted the Holiday Inn
overlooking the finishing stadium in Durban. He then caught the
sound of spectators cheering and felt the surge of emotion as he
completed the run in 9 hrs 45 mins 50 secs. There was then the
bonus of two medals, one for this years efforts and another for
completing back to back races. He was now officially a Comrades
runner, and maybe, just maybe, he will be back next year?
June 16th - Aarhus Marathon
Meanwhile, in the town of Aarhus, Denmark, Tom Murphy toed the
line for the local Marathon, a much lower key event, but still
pretty demanding. After a smooth run all around Tom finished in
4.20.15, a very respectable time. This was however a much more
important landmark for Tom. The manager of the Hobgoblin pub in
Maidenhead, he had suffered a serious stroke last October. The
Club was very happy to see him get around in a great time and
congratulated him on a fine run.
June 30th - Dorney Dash
June 23rd - Thame 10K
Away from Dorney, Mark Hollands and Tom Quigley ran the Thame
10k on the preceding Sunday in times of 35:52 and 46:48
respectively.
June 26th - Watford 3000m Track Race
Unable to make the Maidenhead 5k, Mark Hollands travelled to
Watford on Wednesday for a 3000m track race. Despite the race
starting 25 mins earlier than previously advertised, and only
having 5 minutes to warm-up, Hollands took 15 secs off his
performance in May to record 9:31.
July 8th - New Forest 10
Three MAC runners took part in the New Forest 10 miler last
Sunday. In hot conditions Anne Sloan and Zaf Alam had to take
things a bit steadier and finished in 2 hrs 4 mins. Jon Kew was
towards the front end of the race and finished in a very swift
61 mins.
Eight Maidenhead AC members tackled the challenging but popular
Wycombe Half Marathon on Sunday. First home was Nigel Patterson
in a time of 1 hour, 38 minutes and 20 seconds, followed by
Jeremy Lockett (1:40:17), Greg Marsh (1:45:26), Simon Emsley
(1:49:33), Carolyn Lockett (1:50:14), Dawn Wrigley (1:58:57),
Dave Waterman (2:00:53) and John Smith (2:06:06).
Romano D'Aversa celebrated his selection for the World Duathlon
Championships with a fine run at this aptly named race. The 10
mile course is a good mixture of tracks, trails, road and
towpath run through beautiful Wiltshire countryside. It's
described as 'a good sandwich, plain on the outside, but meaty
in the middle'. Romano was one of three breaking the old course
record, as he came home in third spot in a time of 1hr 9mins 14
secs. This was more than good enough to bring him first prize in
the over 40 veteran category. Also taking on the tough challenge
were Linda Vinton, who clocked 1.43.55 and Lesley Kernaghan, not
far behind with 1.45.23.
End of series Maidenhead AC senior 5k awards went to: Andy
Macaskill (Male), Sue Blackett (Female) and Simon Allison
(Veteran).
July 30th - Watford Track & Field
Absent from the Datchet line-up was Mark Hollands, winner of the
MAC Men's 5k title for the last 2 years. With no prospect of
successfully defending his title, Hollands instead travelled to
an open Track & Field meeting at Watford and completed the 3000m
event in 9:27.76, knocking 4 seconds off his personal best.
August 12th - Bearbrook 10K
August 19th - Burnham Beeches Half Marathon
Maidenhead fielded a good number of runners for this popular
local event, and Andy Macaskill was to the fore, completing the
course in 1 hr 15 mins10 secs to take fourth spot. He was to get
the best of Laurence Miles, who was 7th in an equally impressive
time of 1:16:21. Leading lady for MAC was Claire Donald,
finishing 70th overall and second in her category with 1:28:07.
Paul Bradley and Stuart Mannering battled around well to produce
good times of 1:28:35 and 1:29:15 respectively. Club chairman
Chris Donald clocked 1:29:44, Billy Wilson ran 1:33:32. Nigel
Patterson recorded 1:36:15, Gerry Killen 1:39:06, Tim Holt
1:43:26 and Simon Emsley 1:47:04. Completing the Maidenhead
line-up were Darrell Bressington (1:48:37), Clyde McCrabbe
1:58:06, Linda Vinton 1:59:32 and Peter Slater 2:04:26.
September 2nd - O2O 10K
September 2nd - The Beast 14
Preferring the more challenging of courses, six Maidenhead
Athletic Club runners travelled to Corfe Castle in Dorset to
tackle the aptly named Beast, a 14 mile off-road race. First
home, in 32nd place overall was Jon Kew with a
time of 1 hour 38 minutes and 37 seconds. This was the
latest of a number of impressive performances by Kew in
recent weeks, following his 5th place and time of
1:23:14 in the notoriously tough Isle of Wight
half-marathon. Pursuing
Kew at the Beast were Gerry Killen (1:51:09), Jeremy
Lockett (1:52:40, Carolyn Lockett (2:07:18), Peter Bark
(2:08:05) and John Rickman (2:11:43).
Taking the search for tough competition a little further,
MAC's Joe Middleton travelled to Monaco to compete in the 'Ironman
70.3' triathlon event. Middleton completed the 1.9km swim,
90km bike and 21.1km run combination in a total time of 5
hours, 45 minutes and 38 seconds.
MAC's Mark Hollands finished 6th in the Wissey Half Marathon in
Norfolk. Cloudless skies and stiff winds made for testing conditions
as only 7 runners managed to break 1:20, with nobody bettering 1:15.
Hollands' time of 1:18:45 was good enough to win the male veterans
category.
Tom Quigley tackled the Peasemore Festival 5-miler, crossing
the finish in 36 mins 50 secs.
September 30th - Berlin Marathon
September 30th - Berkshire County Championship 10000m
On the track Maidenhead AC's Mark Hollands took gold in the
Berkshire County Championship 10000m race on Sunday. The
41-year old veteran travelled to Milton Keynes for the race
which combined the County Championships of Bucks, Herts,
Middlesex, and Berkshire into one event. Hollands finished
7th of the 21 runners who tackled the 25-lap race and with a
personal best (PB) of 34:19.7, finished comfortably clear of
the challenge of veterans from the other 3 counties . It
concluded a good weekend for the family, which saw elder
daughter Keren (13), invited to join the Berkshire Squad
training days to develop her hammer throwing technique.
September 30th - Great North Run
The Great North Run produced some fine runs from MAC
members. Dave Rosewell and Gerry Killen matched stride for
stride to clock 1 hr 40 mins 36 secs. Simon Emsley Ran
1:43:50, David Ridley 1:45:37, Mick Fursedon 1:48:00 and
Derek Clark 1:53:16.

Over 8300 miles of running, in just under 5 years,
finally bore fruit for Maidenhead AC's Mark Hollands as he
celebrated his first win on the roads. Hollands took victory
in the Cricklade Half Marathon on Sunday in a time of
1:16:45, the 4th fastest time recorded in the last 4 years
over the mildly undulating course. Hollands, 41, eased into
second place 1.5 miles into the race, but was unable to
close the 10 metre gap on the leader until an incline at the
6 mile mark. As the leader faded, Hollands suddenly found
himself in front, and worked to build his advantage over the
next 2 miles. "It was an amazing experience to be following
the timing car for the first time", said Hollands, "but
nothing compared to the generous applause and shouts of
encourangement from the other runners some 4 miles behind
me, as we passed each other on opposite sides of the road at
around 8-9 miles." Hollands pressed on over the final few
miles as his heart rate climbed over 190, but final mile
splits of 5:49 and 5:45 ensured there was no challenge in
sight as he crossed the finish line.
October 13th - Chiltern League Watford
Maidenhead AC were out in force on Saturday at Watford, for
the first race of the Cross Country season in the Apex
Sports Chilten League. Having narrowly missed promotion to
division 1 last year by a mere 19 points in over 3000, a
strong squad saw them win round 1 with 806 points compared
to second place Bearbrook Joggers with 745 points. With no
juniors representing the club on this occasion, the Ladies
were first into the fray, with Sue Blackett leading the team
home in 5th place in division 2, closely followed by Claire
Donald (7th), Rieko Trees (14th) and Sue McEwen (20th)
completing the scorers. Despite not scoring, Leila Oliver
(31st) and Emma Coombs (32nd) both made valuable
contributions as they pushed scorers from other clubs
further down the finish list, thus depriving them of points.
For the men, Andy Macaskill won the division 2 race, with
newcomer Michael Hoscot 4th. Mark Hollands and Simon Allison
finished 8th & 9th respectively, and were the first two
division 2 veterans to cross the line. Dave Crossland
(21st), Justin Coombs (48th), team captain Stuart Mannering
(56th) and Gerry Killen (59th) completed the scoring. Again,
depth of numbers and strong runs from Jim Tarrant (65th),
Clyde McCrabbe (66th), John scaife (68th), Pete Bark (72nd),
Darrell Bressington (78th), Simon Emsley (84th), Dave
Waterman (93rd) and Alan Church (104th) all went towards
starving the opposition of points.

Twickenham for the Cabbage Patch 10-mile road race,
including 4 members who had run in the cross-country the
previous afternoon. Yet again, Andy Macaskill took his

performance of the men would have secured the male team
prize, however the somewhat unusual formula deployed at
Marlow gave the award to the Chiltern team.

February 26th – Terminator 10
Then came the crazy gang, tackling the appropriately named Terminator. The course is around eleven miles with four energy sapping hills. Simon Emsley was racing closer to home at the Taunton Marathon, this time fighting strong cold headwinds, but still managing a personal best time of 3:47:17. He also managed his first ever 'negative split', which pleased him even more. For those not acquainted with running, this means running the second half of the race quicker that the first. That's no mean achievement after already having run a half-marathon. It augers well for his big races in April and June.

June 3rd - Dartmoor Discovery 32 mile Ultramarathon
Two MAC runners took part in the Dartmoor Discovery 32 mile Ultramarathon on Saturday June3rd. Temperatures were a sweltering 22 deg.C!!! Carolyn Lockett was 67th in 5hrs 41mins (2nd LV45) and David Ridley was 76th in 5:50. Out of 168 starters, there were 154 finishers. For the uninitiated, the race starts and finishes at Princetown (home of the infamous prison) and includes 4000 feet of ascent and descent. A 32 single lap mile road race must be something of an oddity nowadays, but it was a really well organised event. For your average club runner, it involves quite a bit of walking on 10-20% gradient uphills; when I asked the race winner whether he found it easy to run up such hills, he replied "is there any other way". Rather took the wind out of my sails.
June 4th - One Ball Run

August 2nd - Yately 10K Series
The big guns were out at the last of the Yateley 10k series, the culmination of three races held in June, July & August. Toby Lambert set his sights on the course record of 29:47. Unfortunately, a moderate wind curtailed the Alton athlete's ambitions as he settled for the second fastest time ever seen on the course of 30:11. Maidenhead AC's members had slightly lesser ambitions, but Mark Hollands' 34:46 was good enough for 12th place overall and first in his age category (MV40) for the second month in a row. That, combined with his fourth place in June was good enough to win the MV40 series trophy by 2 points. Also picking up a Vet's prizes was Sue McEwen, 3rd FV45 (44:26), which secured her second place for the series in her category, proving Sue’s consistently good running for the club. David Ross clocked 1:53:22 and Simon 1.59.19, excellent performances by both men.
August 13th - Bearbrook 10K

dampen spirits as Sarah Strachan and Pete Bark produced personal best
runs, Sarah clocking 51 mins 19 secs and Pete 43:15. There were also
season best runs for Simon Emsley (45:17) and Pete Ison, whose 53:51

Rickman, home in 53:55.
August 20th - Burnham Half Marathon

better that his previous 'Burnham' in 1 hr 15 mins 53 secs. First for

September 10th - Grunty Fen Half Marathon
Temperatures soaring into the high 20's (80 degF) made the Grunty Fen Half Marathon every bit as arduous as its name implies. The relatively flat and open landscape offered little shade, and a stiff breeze made the race harder still as Maidenhead AC's Mark Hollands discovered on Sunday. Hollands struggled in the heat as he dropped from 9th to 19th place over the second half of the race to finish in 1:21:36, his slowest half for over 2 years, but still good enough to finish 4th in his age category.

MAC times were: Clyde McCrabbe (1:31:35), Dave Rosewell (1:36:22), Simon Emsley (1:36:56), Gerry Killen (1:39:09), Mick Furseden (1:45:53), Derek Clark (1:51:37) and Adele Murdock, in her first half marathon of the year, (2:08:36).

January 25th - Southern Championships
Saturday 25th January saw members of Maidenhead AC's cross country squad make the long trip down to Bicton College near Exmouth in Devon to compete in the South of England championships. In perfect conditions for fast racing, the hilly course provided a demanding test. At stake as well as the championships was the battle for Maidenhead's own 10 mile cross country trophy traditionally awarded to the first team member home in this event. Chris Donald's experience in the big championship races stood him in good stead as he came home 418th in 49 minutes 38 seconds to retain the trophy for the 3rd year in succession. Paul Mee pushed him hard but faded in the closing stages finishing 430th (49:50) whilst new comer Matt McCabe, who continues to improve with each race was 502nd in 52:06. These two will no doubt be putting in the miles over the coming 12 months aiming to knock Chris off his pedestal next time around.
