January 3rd - Chiltern Cross Country at Wing


Three brave MAC runners tackled the freezing conditions for the latest Chiltern Cross Country fixture at Wing, near Aylesbury. The artic conditions meant a hard rutted course, but Simon Allison followed up his good run at Cliveden with an equally quality run of 34 mins 20 secs here. Justin Coombs was the other finisher in the mens event, recording 37:44. Emma Coombs proved her worth as well in the ladies race with 31:05.

 

January 11th - Rough 'n Tumble

Four Maidenhead AC Athletes travelled to Wiltshire to compete in the appropriately named Rough 'n Tumble. A tough and challenging event over 10.4 miles of country tracks with steep ascents and descents. First home was Jeremy Lockett, in a time of 1 hour 32 minutes & 58 seconds, followed by Gerry Killen (1:7:27), Carolyn Lockett (1:39:35) and John Rickman (1:56:02).

January 12th - Thames Valley League, Tadley

Runners from MAC were also battling their way around cross country courses. Tadley was the venue for the fourth Thames Valley League match of the season. Always a testing course this years event took place on the back of recent freezing conditions. Sheets of ice, frozen paths and three stream crossings claimed many casualties in the race. Fortunately the two Maidenhead runners taking part emerged unscathed. Neil Bennet came in first with a time of 41:44, with Dave Ross not far behind in 42:20.

January 11th - Bucks Cross Country Championship

Meanwhile, the previous day Claire Donald took part in the Bucks Cross Country Championship at Old Warden Park, Shuttlewoth. Claire, who lives in Marlow, followed up her fine run in the North of Thames Championship with first spot in the ladies over 45 section. Her time of 26:22 on the 6km course was also quick enough for 5th spot overall.

January 11th - Woodcote 10K

The recent Woodcote 10K run was tackled by eight Maidenhead runners, on a day when the icy weather relented. First home for MAC was Jon Kew with 40 mins 03 seconds, which brought him 14th spot. First lady was Penny Clayton (42:09) in 24th spot and she was also the second lady home. Leonard Richardson tackled the long uphill section well to clock 44:59, a little ahead of Clyde McCrabbe (47:26) and Greg Marsh (48:01) Tom Quigley was next in 48:55 and the other Maidenhead runners to compete were Ellen Raphael (51:55)), Delia Rossi (55:40) and Alison Attard in 57:19.

January 19th - County SportsHall event

Maidenhead Athletic Club juniors produced some outstanding performances at Sunday's County SportsHall event. Placings were achieved by; David Lambeth (1st in both Shot and 2 Lap Sprint), Stuart Cardno (1st Speed Bounce, 2nd Standing Long Jump), Zoe Overall (1st Vertical Jump), James Dash (1st Vertical Jump), Callum Maloney (2nd Vertical Jump) and Jess Davies (2nd Shot). A highly successful day for all fourteen competing MAC athletes was concluded with Lambeth and Cardno being awarded 'Athlete of Match' titles in the under 13 & under 15 boys categories. Following their success in the County SportsHall competition, recently held at the Magnet, Maidenhead A.C. juniors Jess Davies, David Lambeth & Zoe Overall have been selected to represent Berkshire in the South East regional championships to be held at Burgess Hill on Sunday 8 February.

January 25th - Thames Valley Cross Country, Bramshill

At the fifth Thames Valley Cross Country meet at Bramshill two hardy souls competed. Finch Coasters had set out a challenging 5.5 mile course over very muddy forest and heathland. Neil Bennet ran in a time of 43:25 and John Rickman 48:57.

February 1st - Thames Valley X/C, Bradenham Woods

Handy Cross runners hosted the latest Thames Valley X/C match of the season at Bradenham Woods near High Wycombe. Artic conditions greeted the runners for what is undoubtedly the toughest course in the series. The intrepid trio from Maidenhead were happy to clear their heads in the morning after the club's annual dinner. Neil Bennet was once again first home for MAC in 46.16, just ahead of Dave Ross in 46.36, with John Rickman finishing in 52.12.

February 15th - Bramley 10/20

Claire Donald had what she would describe as a 'flier' at last Sundays 10 mile race at Bramley, producing a personal best time of 60mins 47 secs. This gave her first place, four minutes ahead of the second lady, and 11th on the UK all-time best list in the over 45 age category. Maidenhead were out in good numbers in the 10 and 20 mile races. Just ahead of Claire was Stuart Mannering in 60.41, which gave him an impressive 18th place. Also taking part were Benita and John Scaife, who ran together for 98.12. In the 20-miler it was more about preparing for marathons, but Matt Sinott ran a fine 2 hrs 16 mins 58 secs. Steph James ran with Matt early on and crossed the line in 2.19.22. Making a welcome first appearence for Maidenhead was Rob Holden in 2.23.00, with Leonard Richardson clocking 2.24.59. Sayeed Islam recorded 2.41.06, and there were also solid runs by Cmilla Brand (2.42.51), and Jeremy and Carolyn Lockett (2.46.50). David Ridley was home in 2.48.43, and completing the MAC group were Linda Fox (3.32.29), Linda Vinton (3.37.54) and Gill Evans (3.47.07).

February 15th - The Terminator

The Terminator poses different questions, with the 11 mile (ish) course taking in footpaths, tracks, cross-country and lots of significant hills. David Ross ran 1.48.10 and Gerry Killen, with team mate Darrell Bressington, recorded 1.58.56.

March 15th - Arthur Killbery memorial throws competition


Maidenhead AC's Keren Hollands got her season off to a good start at the Arthur Killbery memorial throws competition at Crookham on Sunday. The 15-year old, in her first competition throwing the senior 4kg weight, broke both the under-17 & senior women's club hammer records by over 7m as she went over 22m with 3 of her 6 throws. Her 5th round 22.48m was good enough to win the competition by just over a metre. She also added the club shot putt record with a second round 6.64m, and was just over a metre short of her own club discus record with a first round 20.12m. In the Under-15's, Zoe Overall threw 18.42m in her first competition with the full-weight women's discus. She was unfortunate to be just 8cm short of the qualifying distance for the national rankings for her age group, and looks certain to challenge Keren's discus record over the next couple of seasons. It's worth adding that Zoe is still only aged 12.

March 15th - Hastings Half Marathon

For the Seniors Simon Emsley was back in action at the classic Hastings Half Marathon, always a challenge, and this year run in bright sunshine with a light breeze. Simon was able to cross the line on the seafront in 1 hr 53 mins 33secs.

March 15th - Fleet Half Marathon

At Fleet, in equally kind running conditions Sayeed Islam produced a time of 1 hr 37 mins 55secs and Camilla Brand another solid performance of 1.46.37.

March 29th - Bracknell Track & Field Open Event

Several Maidenhead Athletic Club juniors took the opportunity for early season Track & Field competition at the recent Bracknell open event. Twelve-year-old Zoe Overall smashed the Club under 15 Javelin record by over 2 metres with a bronze medal winning throw of 18.28m to add to a respectable 18.54m in the Discus. A Club record also fell to Bryony Hollands with a run of 2:55.6 in the 800m. James Dash continued to show impressive progress with no less than three personal bests in the 80m (11.7 sec.), 150m (22.0 sec.) and Long Jump (3.94m), while Justine Griffiths also claimed a personal best in the 150m with a time of 23.3 sec. There were creditable performances too from Alisdair Clark, who threw 18.15m in the under 15 Javelin and sister Caitlin Clark who achieved 3.52m in the under 17 Long Jump.

March 29th - Reading Half Marathon

For the MAC seniors, the Reading Half Marathon was the main event of the weekend. First home in a time of 1 hour 18 minutes & 30 seconds was Chris Taylor followed closely by Laurence Miles in 1:18:34, then Joe Middleton (1:27:04), Leonard Richardson (1:27:15), Jonathan Budge (1:27:31), Stephen Francis (1:29:36), Martin Tomkins (1:31:53), Rieko Trees (1:34:04), Nigel Patterson (1:36:29), Christopher Ellis (1:35:59), Alastair Benbow (1:41:08), Joy Noad (1:54:03), Jennefer Francis (1:55:56), Melissa Flood (1:55:51), Linda Vinton (1:58:16), Simon Milford (2:09:38) and Cheryl Slater (2:23:38).

April 4th - Basingstoke open meeting

There were more high-class performances from Maidenhead Athletic Club juniors at the weekend. In the Basingstoke open meeting, David Lambeth took silver medals in the under 15 100m & 200m sprints, recording personal best times of 13.35 & 27.43 respectively. It was another successful day also for Zoe Overall, who took silver in the under 15 javelin with a club record throw of 19.17m. A day later, the girls were in action at the first Alder Valley league meeting of the season. Keren Hollands set new club records in the under 17 Hammer & Shot Putt with throws of 23.75m & 6.81m, whilst sister Bryony also claimed a club record with a run of 2:49.5 in the under 15 800m. Zoe Overall then bettered the under 15 javelin record that she set only 24 hours earlier with a throw of 20.16m and claimed another personal best in the Shot Putt. There were personal bests also for; Justine Griffiths (under 13 75m & Long Jump), Jane Allen (under 15 100m) and Caitlin Clark (under 17 Long Jump). Under 11s are classified as 'non scoring' in the Alder Valley League, but the Maidenhead team of Georgia Waggett, Grace Goldfinch, Toni Dibley and Elle Holloway produced one of the highlights of the afternoon with a storming win in the 4x100m relay.

April 5th - Paris Marathon

Three MAC seniors crossed the channel to tackle the Paris Marathon. First home was Linda Fox in a time of 4 hours 45 minutes, whilst Heather Penney & Justine Toombs came home together in 5:40.

April 5th - Heaven & Hell Half Marathon

Simon Emsley, never one to take an easy option, managed a creditable time of 1:55:06 at the appropriately named 'Heaven & Hell Half Marathon'. in Perth, Scotland.
 

April 13th - Two Oceans Marathon
 

Finding 26.2 miles a bit on the short side, Simon Emsley headed instead to South Africa, to compete in the 56 kilometre 'Two Oceans' race. Emsley completed the long and mountainous course in 5:56:05.


April 26th - Flora London Marathon
 

Eleven Maidenhead AC athletes completed the 2009 Flora London Marathon. First home was Andy Macaskill in a time of 2 hours 48 minutes 38 seconds, followed by Steph James (3:12:51), Jon Budge (3:21:33), Joe Middleton (3:23:10), Jon Kew (3:34:21), Chris Ellis (3:43:08), Sayeed Islam (3:50:45), David Ridley (4:12:55), Linda Vinton (4:18:46), Delia Rossi (4:28:32) and Ravi Bansal (4:53:08).


April 26th - Alder Valley League

 

A record total of 19 MAC Junior Boys represented the club at the weekend's Alder Valley League fixture. Several of the athletes achieved personal bests, including Jonathan Lowe in the 100m & 200m, Sam Lowe (also 100m & 200m), Alexandre Young (100m), Alisdair Clark (Discus) Charlie Davies (Long Jump) and James Dash (100m). The event finished with a great performance in the under 15 Relay with the MAC team comprising Jonathan Lowe, Alexandre Young, James Griffiths and Callum Moloney taking 3rd place in an excellent time of 53.6.
 

May 10th - Berkshire County Championships

Maidenhead Athletic Club's Junior Athletes produced some excellent results at the Berkshire County Championships at Eton on Sunday

Keren Hollands opened the competition in style with a new personal best and club record throw of 24.62m in the U17 girls hammer event to claim the gold medal.

In the Junior Mens' 100m, Malcolm Gledhill won the silver medal with a time of 11.4 secs.

In the U15 boys section, David Lambeth won the bronze shot medal with a new pb of 8.16m. Alexandre Young and David Lambeth both ran well in their 100m heats to book places in the final, where Alexandre finished 4th and David 5th in times of 12.8 secs and 13 secs respectively. Later on, David Lambeth stormed home in the 200m final to claim his second bronze medal of the day with a new pb of 27.1 secs. Alexandre Young threw a new discus pb of 25.92m to claim the bronze medal and in javelin a new pb of 27.26m earned him 4th place

There was also success for the under U15 girls. Sarah Hay jumped an impressive 1.4m in high jump to equal the club record and win the silver medal. Zoe Overall threw a pb of 20.53m in discus and finished in 4th place

In the U13 boys quadrathlon event (75m, 600m, long jump and shot), James Dash produced some good results to finish a creditable 6th out of 16.
 

May 10th - Quintiles Bracknell Half Marathon

Five MAC seniors competed in the Quintiles Bracknell Half Marathon, with Paul Bradley first home in 1 hour 33 minutes 27 seconds, followed by Jeremy Lockett (1:35:44), Christopher Ellis (1:36:31), Carolyn Lockett (1:44:28) and Cheryl Slater (2:15:56).

May 10th - Marlow 5

A larger contingent of MAC runners turned out for the popular Marlow 5 mile race, with Michael Hiscott taking the honours by finishing in 4th place overall in a time of 27 minutes 39 seconds. Also competing were; Matt Davenport (30:45), Joy Noad (33:44), James Tarrant (34:47), Neil Bennet (35:19), Martin Palethorpe (35:49), Thomas Quigley (36:50), Steven Ilott (39:12), Gervase Foley (41:42), Ian Mckenzie (42:05), Caroline Bunn (42:43), Louella Fernandes (45:26), Maxwell Cowlin (46:36) and Katherine Harrison (50:21).

May 24th - Wokingham Half Marathon

There was a good representation of MAC seniors at the Wokingham Half Marathon, with Robert McEwen leading the team home in 1 hour 26 minutes 43 seconds). Newly weds Penny Clayton and Clyde McCrabbe came home in 1:28:15 & 1:40:56 respectively, with Clayton finishing as ninth lady overall. Rumours that the couple continued their training throughout their honeymoon could therefore be fact. Also competing at Wokingham were; Jim Tarrant (1:29:28), Nigel Patterson (1:35:41), Sayeed Islam (1:36:26), Peter Bark (1:38:18), Tim Holt (1:41:31), David Ridley (1:44:34), Delia Rossi (1:55:41), Alison Attard (2:02:42), Lindsey Hinks (2:03:14), Anoushka Howell (2:06:02), Janak Mistry (2:10:08), Helen Sutton (2:11:54) and Cheryl Slater (2:16:45),

May 24th - Baker Hughes Aberdeen 10K

Further north, Simon Emsley and Laurence Miles competed in the Baker Hughes Aberdeen 10K. Miles finished the race in seventh place overall, with a time of 34:49, Emsley following him home in 50:26. Just three weeks earlier, Emsley completed the gruelling Three Forts Marathon, a 27.2 mile race run over and around the Devil's Dyke, in a time of 5:39:47.

May 24th -
Alder Valley Boys League

In the Alder Valley Boys League at Woking, Alexandre Young set a new personal best of 25.94m in the Discus to take second place and Jonathan Lowe ran 100m in a creditable 12.6 seconds also to claim second place.

May 25th -
Andover Young Athletic Clubs open meeting

Maidenhead Athletic Club's Zoe Overall smashed her own Javelin club record, when the 12 year old, from Cookham, threw a new personal best of 21.45m at the Andover Young Athletic Club's open meeting to claim the U15 silver medal. Zoe also threw a personal best of 7.45m in the Shot where she finished 4th, just outside of the medals and also achieved 4th place in the Discus with a throw of 18.82m. Meanwhile, Keren Hollands missed out by the smallest of margins on claiming her fourth club record in as many meetings at the Southern Championships in Ashford. Throwing in the under-17 women's Hammer competition, the 15-year old sent her second round throw out to 24.61m, just 1 centimetre short of her County Championship winning performance earlier in the month, to secure eighth place overall.

June 13th - Borough at the Berkshire Schools Athletics Championships

Several Maidenhead AC athletes were selected to represent the Borough at the Berkshire Schools Athletics Championships at Reading on Saturday. Keren Hollands added the Schools title to the County title she won last month with a 5th round 27.21m in the intermediate (U17) hammer, breaking her personal best by over two & a half metres. Zoe Overall continued her run of good form with 24.00m in the junior (U15) discus to take second place. On the track, Jane Allen finished 4th in her heat of the junior 100m in 13.8sec, with Jess Davies 6th in the intermediate event (15.6sec). Bryony Hollands ran 2:51.1 in the junior 800m.


June 14th -
 North Downs 30K

Maidenhead Athletic Club’s Gerry Killen tackled the tough 30km North Downs Run, finishing in a time of 2 hours 45 minutes & 2 seconds.

June 14th - Wargrave 10K

Eight Maidenhead A.C. runners completed the popular Wargrave 10k. First home was Paul Bradley with a time of 41 minutes 27 seconds, followed by Jim Tarrant (43:01), Tim Holt (43:36), Jeremy Lockett (44:00), Clyde McCrabbe (45:28), Neil Bennet (46:54), Carolyn Lockett (47:56) and Simon Emsley (52:38)

July 4th - Compton Canter

Three Maidenhead Athletic Club runners tackled the Compton Canter, a 10km trails race in rural West Berkshire. All three came home with trophies, with Carolyn Lockett taking the prize for second lady overall in a time of 46:54. Husband Jeremy was first 50+ male in 41:00 and John Rickman took first place in the 60+ category, finishing in 49:06.

July 19th - Wycombe Half Marathon
 
 There was success for Maidenhead A.C. athletes at the recent Wycombe Half Marathon, with Joy Noad finishing first in the Over 50 Ladies category, Nigel Patterson claiming first in the Over 60 Male category and the MAC Ladies team of Penny McCrabbe, Joy Noad, Carolyn Lockett & Caroline Bunn taking the Ladies Club Team prize. Finishing times for MAC runners were: Penny McCrabbe (1:30:25), Joy Noad (1:35:26), Nigel Patterson (1:41:25), Clyde McCrabbe (1:41:40), Stewart Cruickshank (1:44:07), Carolyn Lockett (1:47:27), Jeremy Lockett (1:47:27), Simon Emsley (2:00:35), Dawn Wrigley (2:01:46), Caroline Bunn (2:05:31) and Cheryl Slater (2:20:10). In the 10k race, MAC's Matthew Davenport produced an excellent run to finish in 36 minutes 48 seconds, with Samantha Turner coming home in 60:20.

August 16th - Isle of Wight Half Marathon

Jon Kew took 12th place overall in the tough & undulating Isle of Wight Half-marathon, with a time of 1:25:57.

August 23rd - Burnham Beeches Half Marathon

At the Burnham Beeches Half-marathon, The MAC team of Penny McCrabbe, Joy Noad and Steph James took third place in the Female Team category. MAC runners' times were: Penny McCrabbe (1 hour 30 minutes 01 seconds), Matt Sinnott (1:33:43), Joy Noad (1:36:32), Steph James (1:41:51), Ravi Bansal (1:45:18), Clyde McCrabbe (1:46:05), David Ridley (2:03:51), Simon Emsley (2:11:13) and Darrell Bressington (2:20:48).

September 6th - The Beast

Five Maidenhead Athletic Club runners with a preference for the more challenging of courses, travelled to Corfe Castle in Dorset to tackle the aptly named Beast, a 14 mile off-road race with numerous hills. First home was Jon Kew with a time of 1 hour 36 minutes and 23 seconds. Followed by; Gerry Killen (1:58:23), Carolyn & Jeremy Lockett (2:10:22) and John Rickman (2:27:32).

September 13th - Nottingham Marathon

Maidenhead Athletic Club's Joy Noad returned to winning ways, taking the Over 50 Female first prize at the recent Nottingham Marathon with a time of 3:18:52.

September 20th - Great North Run

The Great North Run attracted five MAC runners amongst its record entry, with Mick Fursedon & Nick Toeman coming home together in 1 hour 54 minutes and 31 seconds. Close behind was Simon Emsley in 1:54:53, then Val Toeman (02:28:55), with newcomers Carol & Matthew Strachan finishing together in 2:32:25.
 
September 27th -  Butser Hill Challenge
 
Set at the highest point on the South Downs, this 5 mile off road race takes in the same hill three times. In good weather David Ross and Gerry Killen managed a very respectable 47:40.
 
October 11th - Henley Half Marathon
 
Mike Hiscott and Simon Allison were to the fore in this challenging local half. Mike recorded 1:16:15 to take third spot, while Simon's 1:21:01 got him third prize in the over 40 category. Matt Davenport ran 1:22:42 (18th) and Richard Taylor 1:27:25 (41st). Joy Noad was first lady for MAC in 1:35:15, followed by Sayeed Islam 1:36:42, Jeremy Lockett 1:42:59, David Ross 1:43:31. Greg Marsh, who has run this race countless times, clocked 1:44:36, ahead of Delia Rossi 1:47:44, Jason Cort 1:58:05 and Allison Attard 2:01:24. Completing the contingent were Anushka Howell 2:09:35 and Linda Fox 2:11:13.
 
October 18th - Friethilly 10K
 
This is becoming an increasingly popular event, and indeed was voted in the Runners World top 20 races. Success came for the ladies this time, with Steph James finishing third lady in 43:12, finishing 28th overall. Joy Noad took top spot in the 0ver 50 category in 46:25. Behind both were the other MAC runners, Jeremy Lockett 47:08, Chris Ellis 47:15, Tim Holt 47:19, Neil Bennett 50:49, Carolyn Lockett 51:11 and John Rickman 53:03.

October 18th - Amsterdam Marathon

On the same day Leonard Richardson ran the Amsterdam Marathon in 3:13 which qualifies him to run in Boston next year. Simon Emsley completed the course in 4:48:13.

October 24th - Black Park 5K

Kate Burgess was the first lady home in Saturday's Black Park 5k race, in a time of 22:15. Kate's time achieved a pb for the 3rd week running.

October 25th - The Stickler 3 Peaks Challenge (Dorset)

Jon Kew and Gerry Killen ran The Stickler (Dorset 3 Peaks Challenge) . Jon’s time was 01:19:04 and Gerry ran 01:29:23.

October 26th - Dublin Marathon

Penny and Clyde Mccrabbe ran the Dublin Marathon, with Penny producing a personal best by 2 minutes, finishing in an impressive 3.07.02. She finished 25th lady, 15th in her age category, but was the second British lady home. She just missed out on the prizes as there were prizes for the first 12 in her category. Clyde suffered later in the race, hitting the wall at 18 miles, but still produced a creditable 4.18.55. Both Penny and Clyde sported Maidenhead hooded tops after the run, and got a lot of admiring glances.
